Waving?

Posted on Nov 22, 2009 in Opinions, Technology

Is anyone actually using Google Wave? I mean, yes, of course people are using it, but having tried the beta, I’ll be honest, I’m left scratching my head, wondering why

Or, as my friend Carl put it in a recent email to me, “Have you used google wave at all? What the f**k am I supposed to do with it?”

Are you riding the wave?

Sure, it can be argued I simply haven’t spent enough time learning how to use it, or getting my contacts to join with me. (I did watch most of the introductory videos.)

But if it’s that much work, I wonder: will it really catch on? Will people really catch the wave?

Don’t get me wrong, I think it’s an interesting idea, but unless it really proves its value quickly, and is extremely easy to adopt, I worry about its future. (Well, maybe “worry” is overstating my level of concern.)

So, I’m wondering: are you Waving yet?

Final got my wave invite. I will try out and give my feedback. From my first impression, it looks more of a collaboration/intranet type of tool. I think Google and others are talking about it in the wrong way probably because of the whole twitter/social media hype.

I also didn’t get Twitter at first. Then I used it. Then I abandoned it because I realized it was redundant to what I was already doing via blogging and Facebook, both of which were more elegant and feature-rich than Twitter (which isn’t saying much).

I might see Wave as useful for far-flung planning, or as an online meeting tool. I’m co-editing a book manuscript these days and wondered if it would be useful for collaborating with the other editor and the author. But it seems onerous and unnecessary. Passing marked up Word files around via email is working fine.

For now, I’m filing Wave under “Solution in search of a problem.”

I too drooled over the introductory videos, only to be underwhelmed when I got to the beta page (perhaps the first users of email felt the same way).
