The Potential

Robert Duvall
Robert Duvall said something during this NPR interview that really struck me:
“I always want to think of myself in the potential. What’s next. I can always grow a little bit and try to do something different and so I’m always looking for what’s out there, the potential.”
In other words, he never lost his passion or his curiosity. He is always interested in what’s next, what might be.
I hope that when I’m 78, I’m still as curious about what’s next as I am now.

14 June , 2010Artists who focus on results over process are limiting themselves. They reduce the likelihood of true creative invention and they minimize the chance they will enjoy getting there. And, they risk failure because it is almost impossible to anticipate the reactions of your audience / viewers / users. If you can anticipate their reaction, then you are probably using a formula for success, and obviously that’s not true creativity.

14 June , 2010The other extraordinary point is the courage it takes to start with nothing and be willing to end with nothing and trust that. I think the trick in the performing arts is to let go of being result oriented. I’m sure that applies to other art forms I just don’t know how.
